Proper care is essential to the longevity of your wigs, hairpieces, and extensions. Both synthetic and human hair have their own special needs in order to maintain a desired look and feel. The following tips will help you properly cleanse and condition your wig, allowing you to look your best.

Storage

When you’re not using it, store your wig on a wig stand or Styrofoam head, and in a cool, dry place. This applies to both synthetic and human hair wigs. You want to keep your wig free of extreme temperatures, mold and dust. This will help maintain the shape, cleanliness, and style of your wig, and ensure it holds up over time.

Cleaning

For a synthetic wig, you should start by brushing it thoroughly with a wig brush. Fill a sink with cold water and add one tablespoon of wig shampoo. Simply submerge the wig for a minute and massage it gently with the tip of your fingers. Avoid rubbing it or pulling it. Rinse it a few times in cold water until it’s thoroughly cleaned. Next, blot the wig gently with a towel, making sure you don’t squeeze or wring it, as this will make the wig lose its shape. Apply a conditioning spray lightly across the wig, holding the spray approximately a foot away. Allow the wig to dry on its stand. After the wig air dries, brush it out to finish.

If you own a human hair wig, you should start by detangling it with a wig brush or comb, starting at the ends and working toward the base. Rinse it in cold water, but do not submerge it, as this will result in matting. Use shampoos specifically made for human hair wigs, and gently massage it evenly throughout the hair. Rinse with cold water, and then pat it gently with a towel. Apply conditioner with your fingertips and rinse it in cold water again. Again, do not squeeze or wring the wig, and allow it to air dry on its stand.

Seven Simple Care Tips

  1. Use products (cleansers, conditioners, brushes, etc.) specially designed for wigs.
  2. Be gentle! Treat your wig as you would treat your own natural hair.
  3. Wash with cold water. Never wash with hot water, as it can damage fibers.
  4. Wash only when you need to. This will prolong the life of your wig or hairpiece.
  5. Never twist, wring, or squeeze your wig.
  6. Avoid sleeping on your wig, which may compromise its style and structure.
  7. Never expose your synthetic wig to heated styling tools.
